It takes skill and nerve to paint the old structures. Some of the houses rise a good distance from the ground and the architectural designs make for interesting corners and angles. I respect the work these guys do, and they earn every penny we pay them. Animandel March 12, 2014

If you’ve ever hired a good house painter, you’ll know the pleasure of having your house quickly beautified, usually in a day or two, without ever having to get paint out of your hair.
Having now successfully completed several exterior and interior projects on my home, the Catchlight team feels like old friends. So I asked Nigel if there really was a way to guarantee that you hire the right painter. He admitted that when it comes to paint contractors, “it’s a bit of the Wild West.” With no formal training or licensing, anyone with a brush can be a painter. But he went on, there are tell-tail signs of a reputable company and important steps that a homeowner can take to ensure that they hire the best painter for their project. Here is what Nigel recommends: Above: Due to extensive wear, detailing, and paint build-up, historic houses like this circa 1890 farmhouse, in Shropshire, England, often need professional handling in order to achieve smooth finish. Flat paint, aka matte paint, falls on the other end of the spectrum. Matte paint has no shine at all, and it’s difficult to clean without rubbing off the paint because water removes it easily.
The primary difference between the cost of interior paints ($10 to $70 per gallon) and exterior paints ($15 to $80 per gallon) is the resin. The resins used in exterior paints are softer, making them resistant to flaking, chipping, and sun damage. The interior paint uses a more rigid resin that resists marking and staining. Many exterior paints use a resin that causes outgassing, an emission of volatile organic compounds. Common to many manufactured products, it is what causes that “new car smell.” The outgassing from exterior paint resins continues for many years, even after the odor dissipates. It is a major reason professionals don't use or allow homeowners to use exterior paints indoors.
